I had a doe die of sudden death right after kindling this week, so feel this info could be of some use to other breeders. Hopefully it will save a does life.
What is Sudden Death Syndrome:
Usually occurs in first time does but can effect older does as well. During or after labor the does calcium levels in the blood stream drop to dangerous levels. Normal calcium levels should be between 8.0 - 15.5. Also an association between low calcium levels and higher than normal phosphorus levels.
Symptoms:
Doe is wobbly or disoriented after delivery. Lying stretched out and listless. Doe appears to be in shock, shaking and grinding teeth.
Treatment:
1/2 CC Calcifan or other calcium supplements IM. If symptoms are severe addition of lact. ringer sub Q is suggested. There may also be a need for supplemental feeding to keep up energy levels.
Prevention:
Addition of Tums or similar product a few days before delivery may help. Feeding a low phosphorus, high calcium diet.
Conclusion:
If you know the signs to watch for you can save these does.
