SORE HOCKS

Sore Hocks is the term rabbit people use when referring to the condition of the soles of the rabbits' feet. The hock of a rabbit is just like the soles of humans' feet.

Some signs of wear are normal on rabbits' hock. Pink, hairless or callused patches are not a problem but should be watched closely so it doesn't develop into something more serious. Sometimes the hocks of a rabbit become so sore and bare that it cracks open, gets infection and bleeds.

Normally it shows on the back feet of the rabbit because that is where the most pressure is. Some breeds of rabbits are especially prone to this problem as it is, to some degree, genetically inherited. If you breed two rabbits together that both have thin pads covering their hocks, your more likely to get offspring that will have chronic problems with sore hocks.

To help speed healing use an antiseptic ointment like Neo-sporin or bag-balm. To reduce swelling use Preperation H. There is a new product out called New-Skin that breeders have been reporting great results with. Please note, you cannot use it if there is infection, or the wound is draining because you want the infection to leave the body, and New-Skin will keep it in.

Prevention is the key to avoiding the problem. Never breed two rabbits together that have chronic sore hocks. Wire cages and damp bedding contribute to sore feet. If you have a wire cage, place a clean piece of cardboard, towel or carpet inside to provide your rabbit with a solid surface.
