PINWORMS

You may never see them, but they are there. Pinworms are living in your rabbit.

Small white worms about half the size of a grain of rice are taking away bunnies nutrition. Check your bunny carefully. You may see them around the vent area of the rabbit or they may be seen in dropping, or you may never see them. But chances are they are there. Pinworms don't cause any real problems, but if left unchecked can drain a bunny of extra nutrition which can show up as poor health and an over all lack of vigor.

Most large breeders and exhibitors treat their entire herds for pinworms twice a year as a routine precautionary measure. There are several medications used for treatment. I prefer treatment with Piperazine-17 (found at most feed stores). I've found this medication to be extremely safe. I have given it to pregnant and nursing mothers and weanlings without ever having any problems. Dosage is 2 tablespoons per gallon of water for 5 days. The rabbits should be treated twice, thirty days apart.

Even if you see no evidence of pinworms its a good idea to treat routinely to keep it in check.
