Medicating Your Rabbit
Your veterinarian or a veterinary technician can show you how to give pills, administer eye or ear drops, or syringe feed your rabbit.
First things first
- The first step is figuring out where exactly is the best place to do the medicating. Most often it will be on your lap or on the floor. Remember - bunnies can kick and jump when frightened so be aware of dangers surrounding your chosen work area.
- Gather all your supplies: You'll have greater success and less stress if you gather all your equipment together and have it handy. Remember to never leave your rabbit unattended on a high surface. Do the preparation work like unscrewing tops, measuring medication, and loading syringes before you go get the rabbit.
Tablets :
- You can try offering the tablet right out of your hand, or hidden in a favorite treat. Sometimes its easier to crush the tablet before mixing
Liquid :
- Hold the rabbit on it's back, or tucked under your arm. Place the prefilled syringe or dropper just behind the front teeth, and squeeze gently, making sure you allow enough time for the rabbit to swallow. You can also try mixing it with a favorite food.
Eye Drops and Ointments:
-
This procedure is best done with an assistant. One person holds the rabbit firmly while the other holds the eye open and administers the drops or ointment. Ointment should be worked around to cover the eye.
Ear Drops:
- Hold bunny in your lap where you can get a good grip with your legs. Try not to touch the inside of the ear with the squirt nozzle, as this can spread unwanted germs to others. Administer the drops and hold on, cause the bunny is gonna start shaking its head...it tickles! Once the drops are in you can gently massage the base of the ear to distribute the medication
Syringe Feeding
- Best done on your lap or safe counter top. Hold the bunny so you have the best access to its mouth. Place the syringe just behind the front teeth and gently push the plunger down, making sure you dont over due it. Give bunny enough time to swallow. This can be a messy procedure especially at first.
