Sanitation

A clean environment is critical to the health and happiness of your rabbit. Regular cleaning reduces the risk of disease transmission and bacteria buildup. You must be very careful to keep yourself and your rabbits safe when you clean, as some cleaning chemicals can be corrosive.

Regular household bleach works well and is inexpensive. Mix one part bleach with 10 parts water. Bleach when mixed with ammonia (urine) can cause toxic fumes, so be sure to spray or soak in a well ventilated area. Bleach must have 10 minutes of contact time to be effective. Be sure to rinse well.

There are many products available made specifically to disinfect around animals. Vanodine V.18 is my preferred disinfectant. Vanodine is iodine based and has viricidal, bactericidal and fungicidal properties. It can be used for surface disinfection, cages and dropping pans, feed dishes and watering cups. It can also be used for aerial disinfecting, and is even safe to add to the drinking water. It is non-toxic to all warm blooded animals.

Use of a blow torch is effective to remove hair buildup but is not a good means of disinfection. For heat to be effective it would need to be hot enough to corrode the galvanizing. If you use a blow torch it is best to follow thru with a chemical disinfection.
