Chocolates are safely bred to Blacks or Lilacs, also to Otters, Himi, Tans and Martens to produce the Chocolate version of those varieties. Chocolate to Opal can produce Lynx.

Chocolate bred to Chocolate or Blue often results in lighter fur color than is truly desirable. Breeders occasionally use Blacks with Chocolates to retain the deep dark color.
